Shelby Bearden, Conservation Educator
If you've attended a summer camp, animal program, or special event at the Museum this summer, there's a good chance you've met Shelby Bearden. Since joining the Museum team in May 2026, Shelby has brought enthusiasm, curiosity, and a passion for Mississippi's wildlife to everything she does.
A lifelong outdoor enthusiast and proud Mississippian, Shelby loves helping visitors discover the amazing animals that call our state home. Whether she's introducing guests to an alligator, sharing fascinating facts about native species, or helping someone overcome their fear of snakes, she believes that creating meaningful connections with wildlife is one of the most powerful ways to inspire conservation.

A Legacy of Conservation Honoring Magalen Ohrstrom Bryant’s Enduring Impact
The Mississippi Museum of Natural Science Foundation recently received a generous gift from Purvis Grange Foundation, Inc. in memory of Magalen “Maggie” Ohrstrom Bryant - a lifelong conservationist, philanthropist, educator, and cherished friend of the Museum.
Known for turning bold ideas into lasting impact, Maggie dedicated her life to connecting people with nature and inspiring others to protect it. Through her leadership at Tara Wildlife, she championed conservation, outdoor education, and land stewardship long before they became mainstream priorities.
Ericka Ligon, Volunteer Coordinator
Behind every successful museum program, event, and visitor experience is a dedicated team - and volunteers are a big part of that story. Ericka Ligon, the Museum’s Volunteer Coordinator, helps connect community members with meaningful opportunities to support the Museum’s mission.
Since joining the team a year ago, Ericka has worked to recruit, train, and support volunteers who help bring conservation and education to life every day. With a passion for serving others and a deep appreciation for community, she plays a key role in ensuring volunteers feel welcome, valued, and inspired to make a difference.

Keeping a museum running smoothly takes more than what visitors see on the exhibit floor - and this month, we’re shining a light on one of the people who helps make it all happen behind-the-scenes.
Whether it’s troubleshooting building systems, coordinating repairs, or making sure every space is safe and welcoming, Clay Hathcock plays a vital role in keeping the Museum operating at its best. With a hands‑on background and a love for the outdoors, Clay brings dedication, skill, and a quiet reliability to the work that supports every visitor’s experience.
